If you are a mother or grandmother, you know how hard it can be to cook foods that children will want to eat as well as being nutritious. It seem as though they can't possibly get the proper vitamins and minerals needed to grow healthy and strong when they are so choosy about what they like to eat or want to eat. If your child is going thru the "picky stage" of their life, this can be even more difficult. There are ways to make life a lot easier on moms and healthier for your child.

Children will eat better if they are allowed or given choices. During the second or third year of their life, they are trying to establish their identity and dominance in their world. A good way to maintain your motherly control is to let them have choices. This gives them the feeling they are in control, such as, do you want to eat spaghetti or chicken? They make the choice and you get satisfaction of nourishment for them.

Another way of cooking for children is to let them help in the preparation of their food. They love to stir, mix and watch it bake but be careful of hot objects or ingredients. Some children just don't like the taste of some foods, the smell, color or the feel of the texture of the food in their mouths but probably will outgrow a lot of the things they don't like by the age of 3 or 4. Sometimes just serving their food on a plate that is colorful, like orange or red, will help them to eat better.

Maybe you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what works and what just isn't worth the bother when you are trying to cook the foods they like the taste of and the nutrition they need to help them grow up healthy and strong but there are ways that can be so simple. For example, if your child likes mashed potatoes, try mixing a little broccoli or carrots that are over cooked a little in the potatoes. They will never know you just added more vitamins and minerals and they will be attracted to the color added by the broccoli or carrots.

Cooking stews and soups will provide a mixture of vegetables, meat, add a grilled cheese sandwich and you have served a balanced meal of protein, carbohydrates, dairy and breads. When they are hungry for snack foods, try giving peanut butter and cracker and fruit juice. Intermec CK3 Wireless Barcode Scanner - Product Review

I recently had the opportunity to test out the "soon to be" released, Intermec CK3 unit. From what I heard around the horn, this unit would be replacing the CK30 and possibly even the CK31 series units. I, like many of you, have had one major concern with the CK series over the past two years and that is the battery life of the CK's.

As many of you have heard from your customers, the CK31 just wouldn't get a "full shift" out of its battery pack even when the unit was fully optimized. To many customers this was a major setback as they saw this as a waste of having to change out battery packs during an eight hour shift.

This being my primary concern, the first thing I wanted to know about the CK3 was will the battery pack make it through a full 8 hour shift. So I put the demo through a series of tests to find out.

The first test I performed was where I pretty much turned on every thing I possibly could on the CK3 demo and left all items running throughout the day while also performing over 500 scans. I had the backlight on, the radio constantly connected, programs going, etc. With everything "booming", I was able to get 7 hours out of a fully charged battery pack...which in all honesty, is pretty dang good seeing that the unit was being used to its capacity.

The next day I performed a similar test but this time I optimized the unit a bit. I did keep the radio connected throughout the day and still performed over 500 scans. I only had the backlight on when the unit was being utilized and cut down on the number of programs being utilized. This being done, I was able to get 8.5 hours out of the battery pack before I left for the day. When I turned the unit off, it still had about 1/4 of battery life left as well.

To sum it all up, the CK3 will get a full shift (8 hours +) out of its battery pack which I think will relieve many of you. On a side note, I was also informed that Intermec will be offering an extended capacity battery pack as well and just to clarify, my testing was done with a standard battery pack.

The Power of Black and White

In sterile, dictionary language, photography might be defined as, "the process, of recording visual images", or words to that effect. I didn't actually look up the definition, but you get the idea. In any event, rigid definitions don't exist when you're talking about art.

Which is the superior medium, color or black and white, film or digital are subjective questions, without definative answers. What works in one situation may fail miserably in another. Sporting events are one example of a situation when color is superior. Landscapes and portrature can go either way. A black and white landscape can save a picture from being overwhelmed by excessive color. Everything comes down to application and execution.

Why Black and White?

Great novel's have a way of expressing profound ideas in ways that go beyond mere recitation of fact. One need only think of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle", or Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Just as great ideas are sometimes most powerfully expressed through fiction, the best black and white photography speaks to deeper truth. Black and white allows the photographer as artist to reveal a world invisible to the naked eye. In black and white, abstract shapes, contrast, and recurring patterns have a psychological impact and dignity often unrealized in color. When the beauty of a common place item comes through in a photograph, the photograph has become art.

Photography began as black and white, or more specifically monochrome. Not all early images were truly black and white. Many had a brownish tint (sepia), and others even had hints of blue when the cyanotype process was employed.

If a relatively young art form can be said to have a 'classical' period, it would probably be that time when monochrome was the only option. The fist photographs to be considered art were all black and white. I suspect this may have let to psychological expectations as to what a classic photograph should look like. Achieving a timeless look has much to do with why many masters of photography continue to work in this medium. From a purely technical standpoint, black and white prints simply last longer. Even the very best color prints degrade over time.

For reason's I cannot explain, some things simply look better in black and white. My personal rule when retaining photographs is......"If in doubt, throw it out". The last thing I do before deleting a picture, is converting it to black and white. Most of them still get thrown out, however, just often enough to keep me doing it, I'm stunned by what I see in black and white. A ho-hum color picture suddenly possesses that indefinable something that makes it a keeper. I've thought long and hard as to why this should be so. I don't have any answers.

I should point out, that most of my work is in color. I love color, and it will probably always be my primary medium. There are times, however, when black and white stands out. If you've ever tried doing serious landscape photography, you know one of the most important considerations is getting the sky right. The best composition in the world won't compensate for a white sky, something that's caused many of my photos have hit the circular file. Setting the exposure meter against the sky can go a long ways towards preventing this problem, but the technique isn't foolproof. On an overcast day metering against the sky can result in other features being too dark.

This is less of a problem with digital photography, especially when shooting in the RAW format, but it can be serious issue with film. Black and white offers a way around this difficulty. If your digital camera has the option of shooting in black and white, by all means use it. Shooting in the black and white mode seems to add a depth and quality lacking when removing color on the computer. An even worse time to set the meter against the sky is midday in summer as that's the time wave lengths of light are at their most constricted. Every outdoor photographer knows the best times are those hours just after sunrise, and just before sunset. Unfortunately, we don't always enjoy the luxury of hanging around until the conditions are perfect.

The next time you're faced with this situation, try black and white with a red filter. Ansel Adams used this technique, and if Ansel did it, it should be good enough for anybody. The red filter turns that whitish midday sky to a dark, lovely grey in black and white. The darker the red filter, the darker the sky. In black and white the sky will look as if it had been a deep dark blue, and no one will be the wiser. Some big, puffy cumulus clouds will make it even better. If you have the opportunity to look at a collection of Ansel Adams photos, pay attention to how he often used clouds to great effect.

Digital photography has taken the black and white medium to unprecedented heights. Today's high end digital camera's and powerful computer software, give the modern photographic artist control the masters of old never dreamed of.

Night Photography

One of the most interesting pictures or photographs to look at will be night photographs. It will allow you to capture different hues and colors during the night that would the normal human eye may miss. The presence of lights will get better appreciated and you can see your photographs come to a different life!

The next thing to note will be the shutter speed of your camera. All you need to do is start out with an aperture of 2 - 5 seconds with an aperture of around f/5.6 if your depth of field is not a priority. Note that there will be a difference in the exposure of 2 seconds to 5 seconds. You can try it out to see for yourself. If you need a longer exposure, just try the shutter. If your camera is able to go up to 30 seconds of open shutter time, the use of a tripod comes in very handy. Honestly, I do not think you can hold your hand still for even 5 seconds, not mentioning 15 - 30 seconds. Well, if you could, kindly let me know what training I need to do.

Night photos do require a good deal of patience since you'll be waiting some time for your photo to expose. Extra care is needed in setting the right settings. Using a flash when taking night photos can speed up the exposure time but it really depends on the type of photo you're taking. Using the flash in the wrong situation may make your photographs dark.

Lastly, avoid noise in your photos by being very careful with your cameras ISO settings. The higher the ISO the less light is needed for the exposure. A thing to note is that noise will reduce the quality of your photos by making them less clear and sharp.

Photography - Understanding White Balance

If you read digital camera reviews you will come across the term "white balancing" again and again. Although the term sounds esoteric, it simply refers to the way you can correct for color casts in your final images.

For example, if under a given set of lighting conditions your shots of a perfectly white polystyrene foam surface produce images with a slightly blue color cast, then you will need to know how to white balance your images for that particular lighting situation. Once you have made the appropriate camera settings, the information will be recorded along with your image in RAW format so that the white balancing information can be applied to the final printable image. This is typically a JPEG file.

So what is the cause of these color shifts?

Photographers who still use film stock may be able to attribute some portion of a color shift to the characteristics of the film itself. This, of course, is not the case for digital photography, where the chemical nuances of film emulsion have been removed from the digital imaging process. Most color casting, then, comes from the lighting source used to illuminate the scene before the camera. Fluorescent lighting, for example, can add a slightly green color shift to images, while a blue cast may result from the diffuse sunlight of an overcast day.

This color bias is sometimes described in terms of an equivalent color temperature. Bodies which radiate the same neutral color spectrum as the sun are said to have a color temperature of around 5000 degrees Kelvin, whereas cooler bodies radiate more in the red portion of the spectrum, and hotter bodies are shifted to the blue.

As an example, the deep red hue of candlelight is typical of a body radiating at around 1000 degrees Kelvin, while the diffuse light of a heavily overcast day is closer to 9000 degrees Kelvin.

On the one hand, talking about color shifts in terms of the equivalent temperature of the light source may be technically useful, but for the average photographer it will likely only lead to confusion. For this reason, you will usually find on the back side of your digital camera, a chart that shows the equivalent white balancing modes to offset the effects of different lighting conditions, and no mention of color temperatures is made.

In addition to an auto white balancing mode (AWB) in which the camera itself tries to figure out the best white balancing setting to use, there are several other manual modes that can be selected. A cloud icon, for example, indicates the white balancing offset that ought to be selected if the scene is being bathed by the light of a fully overcast sky. This setting will compensate for the bluish cast that would be seen in the absence of a color correction. The correction for the generally neutral effect of direct sunlight is typically represented with an icon that depicts the sun.

One way to correct for white balancing, at least on a point-and-shoot digital camera, is to monitor the scene before your camera using your LCD screen. If the image appears too bluish (high temperature light source) you can adjust the white balancing to shift the image slightly to the red. Most digital SLRs use the LCD screen for image playback only, so you may have to take a test shot and view the result first, or if your camera supports it, you can bracket your white balancing (record a triple of each photograph with varying amounts of white balancing added to each), and then select the best result.

The trouble with this approach, however, is that it is somewhat subjective. A more accurate means to correct white balancing is to look for an element in the scene which is white and adjust your white balancing setting to ensure that the white object renders as true white. Carrying a white object with you, such as a white handkerchief, or white card, that can be inserted into the scene, can be very useful.

This is especially the case where the scene itself may predominately contain objects that are either blue or red, since this may cause the camera to select the wrong white balancing if left to itself to decide (in auto white balancing mode). As an example, if you were photographing blue icebergs in bright sunlight your camera might assume the blue coloration was due to a blue color shift caused by clouds and then try to reduce the amount of true blue in the final image.

By being aware of the causes of color shifts, and analyzing your images, you will find that over time you get better at making the needed white balancing correction before taking your photographs. But even if you have yet to get the hang of this while shooting, don't forget that you can often correct your mistakes simply by working directly with the RAW format image after the event. This is one of the real advantages of working with digital images.

Cost Factors of Forensic Animations

In the past, many companies were quoting animations based on a dollar per second rate for finished footage and there appears to be a trend away from this method of pricing. Part of the reason is that the amount of work involved in producing one second of animation can vary enormously depending on what is required and the level of realism. The advances in computer visualization technology available today are mainly responsible for the widening gap between what was possible and what is possible today.

The best thing one can do is educate themselves on what parts of the animation process are the most time intensive and where they can expect to pay the most (or least) for the requirements.

Below is a breakdown of several cost factors that are "tangible". As with any outsourced service, you also pay for reputation, experience and overhead costs, but these are more difficult to quantify. The greatest cost in a forensic animation is the number of man-hours required to prepare, assemble, edit and finalize the animation. Since vehicle collisions are the most common forensic animations, most of the examples used below will reflect this particular example, however, the process and cost factors are more or less the same regardless if the animation being produced is of a crime scene, personal injury case, or medical procedure.

1. Information Gathering and Preparation

During the initial stages of a forensic animation, it is imperative that the animator be brought up to speed on the details of the case. This often means that all photos, video, drawings and reports must be provided to the animator and they must subsequently go through all the materials of the case. Initially, it is helpful to bring the animator into the initial discussions about the trial strategy and what is the objective of the animation. Further, it is useful to have the animator contact the accident Reconstructionist as applicable to go over details of the accident report and if there will be any transfer of other data such as a digital site survey or simulation data.

Where applicable, the animator may be required to travel to the location of where an accident or crime may have occurred. This is to obtain subsequent images and information that may not have been obtained or was not available in the existing scene materials or reports.

2. 3D Models - Recreating the scene assets.

Normally, it is very rare that a forensic animator can reuse the main 3D models in a scene. In the case of an automobile collision, there could be some "standard" 3D models reused such as a stop sign, traffic lights or electrical poles, but there are often times when even these smaller objects must also be built from scratch in order to obtain the highest level of realism.

There are typically three types of 3D models in a forensics animation. These are classified by their level of importance, accuracy and necessary level of detail. Primary objects are those that are directly involved in the animation. Think of them as your primary characters. Secondary objects are those which may not be directly involved, but their movement or relative position plays some part in making the animation accurate or credible. Tertiary objects are those which are strictly for the benefit of visualization and do not play a direct role in the animation. An example could be a tree off in the distance which would not affect the animation if it were removed except for the level of realism.

Creating accurate and realistic primary 3D models is still a time intensive task which has not changed very much over the years. The quality of the models and options associated with the level of realism are greater and therefore, there is an equivalent amount of time required to create the models. Where possible, it may be possible to purchase an existing 3D model and tailor it to suit the needs of the animation. This should only be done when the accuracy of the model is not a requirement and it may be a secondary or tertiary object in the scene.

In the case of a vehicle collision, the ground terrain is a good example of a large scale model which is required to be accurate and a true likeness of the actually area where the collision occurred.

Often, modeling may come from other sources such as CAD files, 3d scanning or photogrammetry. In each case, the model normally requires subsequent work to get the correct look or to adjust the surface topology of the object.

3. Mapping - Preparing and adjusting images

Although this could be classified as part of modeling, it is in fact a separate part of the 3D modeling process which involves the use of photo imaging software. If you were to consider a simple example of a stop sign, there is the geometrical portion of the model and there is the "textured" or "mapped" portion of the object. The red colour of the sign with the letters S-T-O-P is normally not modeled but need to be mapped. Mapping can be accomplished by taking an existing photo of the stop sign and extracting only the portion of the image that relates to the sign itself and not the background. In some cases, photos need not be used at all and the entire image map of the stop sign could be made with a program like Photoshop.

Since photos are often taken at various angles and depth of fields, the image needs to be rectified (i.e. any depth removed such that the image becomes orthographic or "flat") so that it can be pasted like a sticker onto the model.

However, in each case, there is a considerable amount of time committed to the process of editing photo images to extract usable maps for models and the more accurate, and realistic one wants their models to look, the more it will cost.

4. Assembling the Scene

Once all the scene objects have been created, there comes the task of assembling them accurately in the scene. Since accuracy is the single most differentiating point between any animation and a forensic animation, there is a considerable emphasis on the placement of objects and positioning of all the scene elements. In some cases, there are automated utilities to help the animator reduce the amount of time to place objects, but unfortunately, since each forensic animation is different, this is normally done through manual means. Hence, if there are many objects to be accurately placed in a scene, the amount of labour involved increases.

5. Animating the Scene

There are two ways to animate a scene. One is through the import of simulation data and the other is through keyframing. Keyframing is a manual technique where an object is fixed at a certain location at a certain time of the animation. At each point in the animation where the object is "fixed", this is called a keyframe. The 3D animation software interpolates between keyframes to distribute the motion.

A complex scene involving 5 or 6 vehicles would be more involved than a simple animation of 2 vehicles crashing since there are many more vehicles and positions to keep track of. Since there are many clients who request different collision scenarios, there may be several iterations or versions of the animation.

6. Lighting and Special Effects

Once the entire scene has been animated, this is normally the time to adjust the lighting and prepare any effects which might be required in the animation. When trying to replicate the exact lighting of a scene based on reference photos it can often be very difficult to achieve. Consider the range of lighting and weather conditions such as fog, rain, snow or night scenes.

When appropriate, it may be necessary to show breaking glass or skid marks. Creating accurate looking effects is a time consuming process. Normally, it is difficult to quantify something as "accurate" unless it is verified by an expert. For this reason, there could be several iterations of the lighting and special effects in order to match the expert's report/testimony.

7. Rendering

The act of rendering is how the 3D animation software converts the entire scene into a set of images which run (typically) at 30 frames per second. Depending on the complexity of the scene (i.e. complexity of items 1-6 above), a computer can render a single image at anywhere from a few seconds to an hour or more for each frame. Considering that a 1 minute animation has 1,800 frames, the time involved can be as little as 5 hours to 60 hours on a single computer.

Additionally, if there are 5 or 6 different views to be rendered and not taking any edits into account, the rendering portion can take a considerable amount of time.

Fortunately, many animators make use of either render farms (i.e. network of computers strung together that divide the work of rendering) or invest in high powered workstations. There are firms which specialize in providing rendering resources to animators and when a quick turnaround is required, this is an additional expense which is normally translated to the client.

Normally, rendering only makes up less than ten percent of the total cost of an animation. The actual time is dependent on the type of hardware used and this is part of the reason why companies have been moving away from quoting animations based on their length or dollar per second of completed footage.

8. Video Editing and Final Packaging

As the animation approaches the final stages of completion, the last few steps are the editing and compositing of the animation. The addition of any text, title screens, overlaying images and making any adjustments to the colour take additional time which is normally associated with how the animation is to be packaged and presented.

Most people today are finding that downloads and CD's are quite useful for viewing on a computer, however, if a client requests a self running DVD with menus and sound then this is obviously another involved step.

9. Changes and Edits

One of the most overlooked parts of creating a quality animation and avoiding constant changes is to ensure that clear objectives are understood by all parties up front.

Changing the animation half way through a project can substantially affect the total cost and may delay the delivery considerably. Knowing exactly what needs to be shown and limiting the number of edits keeps things on track and limits the risk of cost overruns.

The basic rule of thumb for the cost of a forensic animation is that as the level of detail, realism, accuracy and number of scenarios increases , so does the cost. A complex animation with many details means more preparation, production and verification hours for the animator.

A forensic animation can range widely from $3,000 to $30,000 depending on each of the factors explained above. There are no hard rules to pin down the price of an animation since each one is "custom built".

Be sure to get a clear idea of the costs by providing the initial case information to the animator. Most reputable forensic animators will supply an initial consultation at no cost in order to provide an accurate quotation or to tell you if an animation is even feasible. Also, ensure that clear objectives are set prior to embarking on a forensic animation. This will avoid unnecessary changes, increased cost and will keep projects on track.

Laser Toner Cartridges

Laser printers were once far more expensive than inkjet printers but now the cost of these items are very much reduced, so much so that they now compete with inkjet printer in terms of cost, and once when only a business with very large printing requirements could reasonably afford to buy one the cost is now such that they are within the budget of most people and home offices can enjoy high quality professional publications.

Electrostatic Printing is what we normally call laser printing and the technology used to produce the printed page is vastly different from inkjet printing electrical charges are used to produce the images that are seen. Light photons are discharged onto the cylindrical transparent drum. a laser light is shone onto the drum, letters and images are sent from the computer as electrical charges. The drum is then coated with a toner which carries a positive electrical charge. Negatively charged paper is then rolled across the drum and the positively charged image is transferred to the paper.

The toner cartridges are initially more expensive than the inkjet cartridges but are capable of much greater output a typical high capacity cartridge will yield approximately 4000 pages with 5% coverage. four toners are used they are cyan magenta yellow and black, the good thing is when one toner is used up you can still print using the other three colours, and every last bit of toner can be used. A common trick to get more out of the toner cartridge is when the toner cartridge appears to have run out open the printer remove the cartridge shake it and replace it into the printer this will result in a few more hundred copies being produced, i have done this myself a couple of times when i thought the toner was out and found that the toner settles in the cartridge and by shaking and replacing i am therefore able to extend the life of the cartridge.

The life of most printers will be about 5 years if looked after properly and the cost of the toner cartridges is prohibitive they can be in excess of 25% of the initial purchase price of the laser printer which means you will pay many times over the original cost of the laser printer. To help to defray costs you might do as i did frustrated by the high cost of ownership i simply bought another identical laser printer with a full set of toner cartridges which incredibly worked out at a price 50% cheaper than a set of toner cartridges for the laser printer.

The reason these types of printer are so popular now in the home office market is the quality speed and cost. These once very expensive laser printers are today very affordable and the situation described above no longer exists. Over the long term they will prove to be more economical then the ink jet although the initial investment will be greater than the inkjet. They use less and are cheaper also they can be recycled which helps to ease landfill problems.

The Next Revolution in Home Entertainment - IP Based Multi-Room Distribution

The Holy Grail of distributed audio; unlimited zones and unlimited sources, cost effectively. That milestone will be achieved, and soon, through the combination of digital amplification and IP based distribution systems. There are systems available today that use one or both of these technologies, such as Oxmoor's Zon system and Netlinks' Netstreams product line. The trend will only continue to grow.

The beauty of this approach is that digital music is data, and, as such, can be distributed easily via an Ethernet network. The traditional concept of zones virtually disappears, as each amplifier on the network gets a unique IP address, enabling an audio stream to be routed to it. When combined with a digital music server, the number of zones is limited only by the ability of the server to serve independent audio streams.

The advent of cost effective digital amplification, produced by companies such as D2 Audio and Flying Mole, allows a small, highly efficient audio amplifier to be located close to the speakers, either in the room or mounted in an electrical box. The logical evolution of this approach is to collocate amplifier with the speaker, creating an active speaker. Additional benefits are realized by incorporating the speaker as part of the circuit. This enables the designer to engineer the speaker and amplifier circuits for optimum performance as a system.

Low powered designs of this nature could take advantage of power over Ethernet (POE), simplifying system wiring by allowing a single CAT-5 cable to be run from the router to the speaker. This would not supply a large amount of power (about 15 watts) due to the constraints of the 24ga conductors used in CAT-5. However, the efficiencies gained by an integrated speaker / amplifier design would mitigate this concern to some degree. This type of system is sufficient for background music applications in many residential environments.

Higher power systems can use the existing speaker wire, in the case of a conventionally wired system, to carry power. It can / does use the existing control cable, since many systems have been wired with CAT-5 to the volume control location, for the data.

The bandwidth of a traditional 10/100 network allow, for all practical purposes, an unlimited number of zones and sources in a residential environment. Partly because of this, Audio Over Ethernet has been used successfully in the commercial audio and sound reinforcement world for a number of years now. Cobranet, from Cirrus Logic is the most popular commercial AOE system used today. Another popular system is available from Digigram. These systems both use the MAC layer of Ethernet and are not actually using IP for transmission.

For both residential and commercial applications another primary advantage of using Ethernet is the ability to use the medium for transporting both audio and control signals down the same wire. This increases flexibility and reduces cost for both installation and material.

As was true in the commercial world, the distribution of audio (and soon, video) and control via Ethernet will continue to proliferate in residential distributed audio applications. The combination of flexibility, cost effectiveness and capability are to attractive to be ignored.

How to Care for a New Oil Painting

When purchasing or obtaining a freshly painted oil painting, it is very likely that it has not truly "dried" yet. Oil paints can take between a few months to a year to "dry" despite feeling dry to touch. Therefore, let's make a distinction between these two states of dryness:

Dry: being dry to physically touch (taking a week to a month).

Cured: being dried chemically (taking several months to a year).

Although determining if an oil painting is physically "dry" or not, is relatively easy; however, determining if an oil painting is "cured," is a little trickier. Provided that the painting is dry to touch, there are a four major considerations in caring for your painting:

1. Uncured paintings are damaged more easily, especially in the early stages of curing.

In the early stages of curing only, you can physically feel the difference between a cured painting and an uncured one, as the uncured painting will feel, "soft" almost rubbery. (Please don't test this by running your fingers across a new painting that you intend to keep, the painting is very susceptible to damage, even rubbing off color if the painting has just dried). Therefore, keep in mind that you want to protect your painting from being scratched, rubbed against, or from rubbing off color (such as touching or using a regular cloth). When dusting any painting, use a soft cloth, feather duster or lightly forced air to dust with as paintings can still be scratched after they have cured.

2. Oil paintings require oxygen to cure.

Oil paints cure through oxidation, and how you store the painting will make a difference in curing times. Therefore, closing it in a case with no ventilation, or placing it right up against a sheet of glass when framing, will greatly slow your curing times. If you wish to use glass with a frame, ensure that you have at least 1.5 cm or about inch of air between the glass and the painting. This might slow your curing time but it will at least cure and protect it from being scratched.

3. Uncured oil paintings can be light or dark sensitive.

Since curing an oil painting is a chemical process, some pigments will react to extremes in lighting. As with any painting, avoid hanging it in sunlight or near bright halogen lights as it will fade; however, only during the curing period (of up to a year) should you avoid keeping it in the dark all the time. From experience, I've found that keeping a freshly painted oil painting in a dark room for the curing process caused the white pigment to yellow. The closer the painting is to being cured, the less dark sensitive it will be; therefore, when it is cured, it is no longer dark sensitive and no longer an issue..

4. Never use any varnish or any liquids of any kind (at least) until it is cured.

During the curing time, or the first year to be safe, leave the painting alone from anything liquid. Liquids of any kind, especially solvents can react, even ruin your oil painting, even when cured. Please research the topic thoroughly on items to use in protecting your oil paintings, and do not test them out on your painting until after they have cured. Keep in mind that some chemicals will still react with a cured oil painting or soften the oils and ruin your painting.

Finally, keep in mind that with proper care, an oil painting will virtually last forever. Photos typically will not, even acid free photo paper will eventually age, oxidize and become brittle over time. With care, oil paintings can remain pristine for centuries and hopefully become family treasures to be passed onto your descendants.

Posing the Subject For a Portrait Photograph

This article aims to highlight some simple methods for finding a suitable poses for any subject, and focuses primarily on a head and shoulders portrait of a single sitter.

Shoulders

When the shoulders are square to the camera, they will appear artificially broadened, and give the portrait a very static look. It is usually best to position the subject so that the line of their shoulders is about 30 to the the subject/camera axis. The easiest way to do this is to sit the subject on a chair placed at an angle of 30.

Use a chair without arms, because the subject will automatically use them, and this tends to make clothes ride up, affecting the shoulder and neck lines. The best shoulder line is produced when the hands are placed in the sitter's lap, or the far hand place on their knee (the idea here is that the near shoulder should always be higher than the far shoulder).

Depending on the subject, a good pose can be obtained if the subject sits facing away from the camera (i.e. back to camera with shoulders still at about 30 to the the subject/camera axis), and looks back over their shoulder.

Head

When the shoulders are at 30 to the the subject/camera axis (facing the camera), the head can rotate through an angle of about 100. The head can also be tilted either side of the vertical axis. The exact degree of rotation and tilt will depend on the subject, and require some experimentation (and you may need to adjust your lighting) . If the head is turned too far, it can produce unsightly neck wrinkles.

Generally, very formal portraitures are produced when the axis of the facial features is vertical (i.e. it is not tilted to either side). This is often a good option for more mature subjects.

Tilting the head to either side creates a diagonal axis to the features. This suggests movement an vitality, and is often best for younger subjects.

If the subject has a weak chin, get them to tilt their head back a little, which will make their chin stick out. If they have a strong jaw, have the subject tilt their head forward reduce its prominence.

Care needs to be taken with 3/4 portraits (i.e. the face is at an angle of about 45 to the subject/camera axis). The tip of the nose should not coincide with, nor cut through the profile of the cheek.

Eyes

The eyes are the most important element of a portrait. They should not be looking down, unless you wish to convey thoughtfulness or any other emotion (e.g. coyness, sadness, etc).

Eyes looking directly at the camera is usually the best option.

Take care when photographing eyes that are not looking at the camera. This creates a sight-line (a line that the viewer's eyes follow), which can lead the viewer's eyes out of the picture. The best option here is to include a little more background, so that the subject's gaze falls within the frame.

Smiles

Genuine smiles are hard to capture. Avoid big grins and grudging smiles. Some people smile easily, while other rarely smile at all. Go for a natural expression, be it serious or smiling, and remember, true feelings are expressed by the eyes!

Camera height

The optimum camera height for portraiture is at about the same level as the subjects eyes. Raising the camera height a little about eye level can cause the subject to open their eyes a little wider.

Conversely, dropping the camera height a little below eye level can add height and dignity. Experiment. If taking a head and shoulders portrait, you don't need to read any further.

Hands

Hands can be included in a head and shoulders shot, but are difficult to photograph because they can easily look like a bunch of bananas. They should not be nearer to the camera than the face, or they will be too prominent. Hands turned sideways with fingers extended look elegant.

If including hands, try and give them somewhere to rest, or something to do (e.g. holding a prop).

Arms

If forearms are to be included in the shot, they should not form a vertical line. Ideally forearms and hands should point towards the face. However, watch for changes to the shoulder line, as raising a limb can also raise a shoulder (the near shoulder should always be higher than the far shoulder).

Multiple subjects

The single most important objective is to connect the subjects in some way (e.g. looking at each other, touching heads, etc), otherwise they might as well be photographed separately.

Avoid heads in a row, and gaps between the subjects. Make one head higher than the other(s) to create a triangular composition. Two heads inclined towards each other also forms a triangle.

How to Produce For Cartoons If You Only Write and Not Animate Or Draw

Recently somebody asked me a question. The question was short but simple and straight to the point.

'Please I need help in producing a cartoon. I can write but cant draw. How do I start?'.

I thought that it was a question whose answer should be shared, and therefore instead of answering directly on the article I thought I would make it an article instead. So here it is. If you can write, but cannot draw or animate, what can you do to embark upon the path of cartoon production?

Well, believe it or not, a writer's chances of producing a cartoon is even better than an animator's!

Not convinced? Heard of the saying - "it's all in the plot"?

75% of a cartoon's success is dependent on a good concept and storyline, not how good the cast is or how good the animation is! Look at South Park! Do you call that good animation? But has the ridiculously simple flash animation stopped South Park from making families across the world roar with laughter and the producers from making obscene amounts of money? No! Yet South Park would just be a piece of crappy animation without the magic of the scripts! Incidentally, the producers are also the writers in most, if not all, of the scripts.

On the other hand, an artist is an artist is an artist. An animator is an animator is an animator. They usually just draw or animate. But please don't get me wrong. There are some multi-talented animators and artists who can think of great concepts and ideas too. Just that the specialization is somewhat different and if you start off as a writer, you are more in tune with the top line aspects of producing a cartoon.

Now, if you are convinced you can really write, you may like to follow the steps below to embark on your journey to produce a cartoon.

1. Come up with a strong story concept and think of all the characters that would be in the story.

2. Work with an artist either through a partnership or through outsourcing to create a character bible.

3. Look around for an animation that has a history of producing their own intellectual properties (IP). There are plenty of such studios around, so all you have to do is scout around for a suitable studio that has a history of producing cartoons similar to your genre of writing.

Here, you can (a) pitch your cartoon character bible to them (b) offer to write a few sample synopsis and a sample episode for one of their ongoing cartoon series.

You would be very very very lucky if a studio options your cartoon concept and decides to produce it! It usually doesn't happen for newbies because they don't like to take chances with newbies, but most likely it's because new writers just don't have the 'ooomph' factor in their ideas yet.

Either way, if you are really good at your writing, it opens up the opportunity for them to consider you for a writing contract. If you fail to get an assignment, politely ask the studio for the reason. If it's because they think you aren't good enough, it probably means you aren't good enough. You can go back to hone your skills some more or you can carry on trying. If more than 3 studios tell you the same thing it usually means you really aren't good enough yet. But practice makes perfect. If you keep trying you would probably get your first assignment,

4. Once you get your first assignment, cherish it like gold! Be flexible about everything (including payment) and cherish the opportunity. Don't do anything to destroy this silver bullet and do it like it's your first and last chance! Nobody likes to work with people who are too straight laced and the truth is - after you carve a name for yourself in the industry - companies will scramble for your services even if you are expensive. Don't be prima donna when you are just a newbie. In fact, my advice to you is never to be a prima donna.

5. Try to be involved in as many parts of the production as possible. Ask to be involved in checking out the storyboards and offering your 2 cents on how you think the camera angles should play out. Ask to see the animatics so that you can give your opinion on the pacing and also the animation. You get the idea. Don't ask for extra fees because most studios would rather do without your help in these areas then. But you can gently request for some credits for offering your creative input. That at an early stage in your career is worth more than money! But don't be too pushy because studios rarely want to give producer or creative credits to a newbie, no matter how good you think you may be. The idea here is to get you as much experience as possible on other parts of the production pipeline.

6. As you get more experience working on such projects, you can begin negotiating for larger roles besides being just the writer. And the best part is, you can start pitching your ideas to TV networks and studios and you can bet some good moolah that they would want to listen to what you have to say!

The first concept you must grasp is that 3D means 3 dimensional and 2D means 2 dimensional. Now before you think I'm stating the obvious, let me go on to say that the 3D and 2D in animation refer to the dimension in which the animation was created. Ahhhh. The plot thickens eh?

For 2D animation, everything happens on a 2 dimensional platform. Pictures are flat, without depth and offer only one pespective. Objects and characters are usually drawn without the subtle soft shadows we see in real life and colours have few varying shades. In 3D animation, everything happens on a 3 dimensional platform. Pictures have depth and offer multiple pespectives just like in real life and have soft subtle shadows casted on the objects and characters within.

In 2D, characters look cartoonish and unrealisitc. In 3D, characters can look cartoonish but realistic at the same time.

Another way to think of this is to think in terms of a painting and a sculpture. 2D is a painting, and 3D is a sculpture. 3D introduces "depth perspective," so we not only see a rectangle (2D) but a CUBE (3D). You may also want to think of it like being the difference between a photograph of a glass of water (2D) and being able to reach out and actually pick up the glass of water (3D).

The King also has a bag of dirty tricks. He takes a gun against the Bishop, strikes down the Rook with magic powder, and hurls a bomb at the Knight. When capturing the Queen, he embraces her passionately before hitting her with his scepter when she tries to stab him in the back with a knife.

When defeated, the King ends up resembling a deflated two-dimensional cartoon character. The Knight cuts open the King's robe, and pounds him into a two dimensional version of himself that looks as though he has been run over by a steam roller. The Pawn, with a flip of his lance, then takes the King's crown for himself as the King pounds the ground in frustration.

Battle chess attracted a large number of imitators but none matched the humorous animation of artists Todd Camasta and Bruce Schlickbernd. The game can be played with 3D animation, and there is also a version in 2D with no animation. There are a total of 30,000 different moves in the game's library. Recently, I came across a software which allows me to access great deal of satellite photos. Then an idea comes to my mind, I can perform some research with these satellite photos. If we have access to topographic maps, aerial photographs, together with the use of satellite photos and maps, we will be to make a great deal of landform research without leaving our homes.

This software which gives me the access to satellite photographs is Google Earth 3D. Although it is a free software, it also provides paid premium services. I can even locate the house I'm staying in with Google Earth 3D. The terrain feature and the ability to zoom in and out also allow us to perform analysis from the town aspect, or even from the city aspect. We can trace the rivers which run over a great deal of distances, the great mountains which link to the smaller mountains. There is some much we can do with this free resource.

Building and Soundproofing a Home Recording Studio

"How do I soundproof my garage, basement, or a bedroom in my single family house or condo so my 4 piece rock band can practice and record and not bother the neighbors?"

If I had a dollar for every time I was asked this question, I would be in the Bahamas right now, instead of writing this article. Many factors need to be considered prior to beginning your studio or practice room-soundproofing project. Some of the questions you should be asking yourself are: What type of amplification will the band be using, are the drums going to be acoustic and miked or are they digital. Are you going to be recording live late at night or are we going to be doing "line in" recording only? These questions and many more need to be considered before the actual construction begins. If live recording and rehearsal are the plan, then maximum soundproofing will be needed. The most effective way to soundproof a garage, basement, or bedroom is to actually construct a room within a room (go to www.auralex.com) and download the free booklet "Acoustics 101", this is a wonderful resource for the home studio builder.

Their ideas are solid and applicable to any studio-soundproofing project. The room within a room concept utilizes the sealed dead air space that is captured between the inner walls and the outer walls to help greatly with the soundproofing endeavor. It is probably easiest to frame the walls on the floor and then tilt them up into place thus making dry walling the outside of the walls much easier. It is also highly recommended that another ceiling be joisted out for the room within a room, however, this is often times not possible due to space constraints.

In this case, the existing ceiling and ceiling joists may be used as the ultimate ceiling for the studio, provided that it is adequately soundproofed with materials such as the mass loaded vinyl or a combination of closed cell foam mat and MLV. I will elaborate on these materials, as we get further into this article. Once the walls are framed out and the right amount of "Dead air space" is determined, then it is time to install the soundproofing. The first order of business is to consider what needs to be done to the wall cavities prior to installing a barrier and finally the wallboard. I like to line the inside cavities with a closed cell vinyl nitrile foam mat such as American Mat. This mat (generally 1/4" thickness) is adhered to the inside cavity walls as well as the studs and joists using a contact cement to adhere the mat. Keep in mind that the American Mat is used to line the cavities only, not to fill the cavity. If thermal insulation is needed, use products such as rock wool, mineral wool, cut wool fibers, or my favorite, Roxul. Roxul is a great thermal rock wool based batt type insulation that has great soundproofing qualities. If thermal insulation is a requirement for the practice room or studio, then Roxul is the way to go.

Now we come to a crossroads, it is time to determine if decoupling the walls using resilient channels or American Sound clips is a necessity. De coupling is used when impact transmission or low frequency noise is a factor. Impact would come primarily from the drums (acoustic type) or the bass amplifier. However, if the band is using Marshall high powered amps (50 watt amps with 4 X 12 cabinets for example) along with miked acoustic drums and an Ampeg bass system, then decoupling will most likely be necessary. These methods and procedures will be explained in later articles. If decoupling were determined to be unnecessary, then the next step would be to find a good barrier material such as American mass loaded vinyl (which is a high grade mass loaded vinyl barrier). This barrier could be stapled directly to the studwork on a wall assembly or directly to the joists. This is a method that is used if cost or space constraints are factors. If the barrier material is to be stapled directly to the stud or joist framing then it is best that the seams be over lapped, caulked (using OSI acoustical caulking compound) and then taped with either a lead tape or a heavy-duty PVC seam tape.

Once the Mass Loaded vinyl (MLV) is installed and sealed, it is time to install the final layer of drywall. I always recommend using 5/8 drywall as the final layer because of its mass and its sound blocking abilities. . It is always advisable to butter the edges of the last layer of drywall with acoustical caulk. You want to grab every STC (sound transmission class) point you can when trying to make your new studio as soundproof as possible. Finally you will tape mud and paint your final layer of drywall. Now you have a great soundproof home recording studio. We will discuss acoustical treatments for your studio in subsequent articles, but for now you are well on your way to having a professional grade-recording studio in your home.

When it comes to providing quality, High Definition programming, there is quite a bit of fierce competition between the various cable and satellite television providers. When does a television become HD? 'When it's ready and enabled to display high definition signals' would be the obvious answer, but this is somewhat non-descript and electronically it goes a lot deeper than that.

A television screen or projector lens that is HD enabled has a higher resolution than that of a standard TV. This means that the lines which go across the screen are able to be closer together whilst still projecting the image. Because they are closer together, the pixels between them are smaller and there is space for a lot more detail in the image. The reason that most HD television sets are Plasma or LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is that they can display the greater amount of information sent to the screen with their lines which are closer together.

Regular television screens have a maximum resolution of 480p (NTSC), or 576 (PAL), which means any HDTV is around double the quality of a standard one. There is also ten times the amount of pixels displayed on an HD screen than a standard screen at any time; thus greatly improving the quality of the picture.

The label 'HD ready' that you see on televisions and projectors means that the screen has a resolution of 1080p, 1080i or 720p and comes with an HDMI or DVI cable. The other two products that are needed to make HD work on your TV are up to you to find and these are an HD set top box and an HD service such as Virgin Media or Sky HD. If you're missing one or more of these components then your HDTV set won't work and the image will appear exactly the same as it would on a standard television.

If you're left wondering what the p's and i's stand for then the explanation is quite simple. P stands for 'progressive' and I stands for 'interlaced'. With a progressive scan mode each line is enabled vertically one after the other, whereas interlaced scans the data onto the screen firstly with all the odd lines and secondly with all the even ones. The differences between the two are that the progressive mode is better suited to movement and interlaced mode delivers the data to the screen very quickly.

To summarise, an HDTV is one which delivers a higher density of pixels to your screen and therefore a better quality picture as you watch. There is a lot more room for intricate detail which results in real life images having more natural lighting, smoother movement and a greater sense of depth. Watching your favourite programmes on an HDTV is, on the whole, a much more realistic feast for the eyes.

Even with the cost of theater tickets going up and a large popcorn costing as much as lunch at a decent restaurant, I would still, fork over my hard earned money. Why? Because some movies I just wanted to experience in a movie house. I could not imagine the latest superhero action blockbuster on my meager home screen. I wanted the big screen experience.

A few months ago, I decided to realize a dream and build a home theater. I had been planning this for years, and quietly stashing away money while continuing to improve my home theater plans. Finally the day had come, and now you will never see me in a theater again. A movie house cannot compare to a good home theater system; from personal experience - here's why;

1. Picture Quality - Sure some theaters have begun to upgrade to digital, but they still cannot keep up with the advances in the home consumer market. As of this writing the typical resolution of a high definition television is 1080 pixels using a progressive scan. Newer sets use 120hz and 24fps creating and even smoother, crisp picture during fast pans and fast action scenes. Using a top quality plasma television of 1080p projector, your home theater will beat a movie house picture hands down.

2. Customization - Movie theater normally adhere to industry standards in setting contrast, brightness, color balance, sharpness, etc. This standard set to what accurately represent to a wide audience what the filmmaker had envisioned. This may or may not be your taste. If not, it's your home theater, you are free to adjust the picture to what is perfect for you.

3. Environment control - Too cold? turn the thermostat up, or get a blanket. Never again miss a critical part of the movie because you had to use the bathroom or refill you popcorn. You have a lovely little pause button. You control the volume, when the movie starts, you can even go back if you missed some important dialogue.

6. Sharing - It's great to share this experience with friends and to enjoy a good movie with close friends.

7. Sports - You can also enjoy all the above while watching the NBA playoffs and or watching the Superbowl.

For my home theater I opted for a 1080p projector with a 110" screen (that's 9.2 feet) and a 7.1 speaker system with two 10" 300 watt subwoofers. A 7.1 system means I have a center speaker for dialogue, two front speakers, two surround speakers and two rear speakers. Since I have two subwoofers I guess you could call it a 7.2 system.

It used to be that one of the top reasons web pages were ranked highly was due to their excessive use of stuffing keywords into their meta keywords tag or filling up their web page with the same word or phrase over and over; also referred to as "keyword density".

As times have changed and as they continue to change there is still one critical element to effective SEO that has remained consistent throughout all search engine time and that is your title tag.

The title tag on your page holds a great amount of weight in the search engines; however, many websites still use their title tag the wrong way. What follows are the top 5 tips for effective title tag design that you can begin using right away for your on-page SEO strategy.

And just for the record, when we refer to the title tag, we're referring to the code on your web pages that looks like this:

Tip #1: Keep your title tag under 64 characters. While each of the largest search engines; Google, Yahoo! and MSN each have their own rules when it comes to how many characters they display on their search results page, Google has the most restrictive rule of 64 characters. Anything longer than this, you run the risk of very important keywords or phrases not showing up in the search engine results page. This is important because your title tag is the hyperlink that a search visitor would click on to get to your page and if you had included some very important keywords in a text string longer than 64 characters, that title tag would get cut off in Google.

Tip #2: Keep the most important keyword for the web page front and center. What this means is that whatever main keyword or phrase you're optimizing for on your web page, make it the very first word within your title tag. For example, if you were optimizing a page for "gourmet coffee" then you'd place that word at the beginning of your title tag. < title>Gourmet Coffee Tastes Great< /title>

Tip #3: This goes without saying but always, always use a title tag for each and every one of your web pages. You'd be surprised how many people overlook this simple little thing on their web pages but just to give you an example, visit Google and type in allintitle:"Untitled Document". This will return all of those web pages that currently don't have a title which means that they're missing out on all of the potential search engine rankings they could be getting.

Tip #4: Remember that you write for a web searcher not a search engine. What this tip means is that even though you may be following the rule above by placing your main keyword at the beginning of your title tag, it must still read well for a typical web searcher. This is important because when your site does come up in the search engines results pages, the title tag for your web page is what becomes the clickable link that will take a web searcher to your web site. Additionally, the keywords that the person searched on are bolded if they're contained within your title tag; and if you've done your job correctly, they will show up bolded within that link. If you simply can't make the title to your page sound like a normal person would talk, then simply just use your keywords.

Here's an example using our "gourmet coffee" keyword. You know by now that the phrase "gourmet coffee" should show up within your title tag since that's the word you're optimizing for. However, you might mention some gourmet coffee brands on this same web page and be tempted to use them in your title tag like so:

This doesn't necessarily read well to the end user (the web searcher) so if you can't make it sound like a real person would speak, don't toss keywords in there just for the sake of using them. Stick to the simple keyword phrase of "gourmet coffee" like so:

Tip #5: Keep your company name out! A very large mistake that many companies make is by placing their company name at the beginning of the title tag like so:

First off, the main keyword phrase isn't listed near the front of the title tag which is mistake #1 and mistake #2 is that the search engines will believe that the web page they're indexing is about "The Coffee Company" first and "gourmet coffee" secondarily.

If you're looking to rank your site for your company name, this is all well and good (although not recommended). You're attempting to rank for "gourmet coffee" but instead are giving a higher importance to your company name.

If you absolutely must use your company name in your title tag, then place it at the end - like so:

Whenever possible, keep your title tag simple and to the point. There's no need to place an excessive amount of information within the title tag. Stick to the keywords that you've chosen for that page, keep your company name out of it if your boss will let you, and you'll be thanked by the search engines by being so well-informed.

For the last 5 or 6 years the media (and therefore also the public) has focused either the huge television sets or the extremely small televisions that can be carried around in your pocket. On the tiny end of the scale you have the portable players with 2-4 inch screens that can pack enormous amounts of video into a piece of hardware the size of a wallet or even a credit card.

On the other end of the spectrum there are the large HDTVs where anything smaller than 42 inches isn't even worth talking or writing about if you ask much of the popular media. You are sometimes left wondering if there's still anything in between these two extremes - while both of these types of technology are impressive nonetheless.

Finding a normal television with a 4:3 aspect ratio in a similar size between twenty to thirty inches is actually becoming more and more difficult. That is unless you are then compensation by going for digital televisions like LCD screens or plasma screens. The most significant difference between the TV's that are available today and those that were available ten years ago is the fact that modern standard definition television sets typically have digital tuners built in. The TV manufacturers are preparing for the change to digital television (planned for 2009) even though it's unclear whether or not it will actually happen on schedule.

There is a bigger question than whether or not standard TV sets are still available. This brings us to another of the many advantages of HDTV sets - Even if you are not watching HDTV on it, there's an increasing trend to broadcast normal television shows in the wide screen format that looks good on HDTV screens.

Even the best, quality stereo speakers are bound to crackle from all of this abuse over time. When that happens, you may have the chance to save yourself some money by repairing those broken speakers instead of buying new ones.

It all starts with finding the problem causing the sound problems. It can be an enclosure damaged or maybe it blew out from an electrical or thermal fuse. Problems with the voice coil are a common problem, sometimes the crossover network is faulty and even problems as easy as a solder connection can be the cause of your problems. Whatever your speaker issue maybe, it can be fixed. Here is a breakdown of how you can repair a speaker that is blown out.

The first thing you need to do is figure out which speaker is giving you problems. You can easily do this by playing around with the stereos equalizer. Alter the balance and the fader to isolate the speaker causing the distortion in sound or if there is no sound at all. Be sure not to have the volume blasting or you run the risk of blowing out a good speaker.
Once youve figured out which speaker is the bad one, you now need to take it apart. Try to do this step carefully because you dont want to cause further damage to a part which is working fine. Remove the faceplate of the speaker and then gently loosen the seams of the speakers fabric without tearing it.
Now that the speaker cone is visible, you can begin repairing it. Have some tape or glue handy since this is what you will primarily be using if the cone of the speaker is punctured or torn. Youll want to make sure the hole or tear is completely covered before moving on to the next step.
Test the voice coil to see if it is damaged in any way such as if it melted at some point for example. If there is even the tiniest of gaps in the coil, no sound will flow from the speaker or it will sound extremely distorted, depending on the size. If you see that the voice coil is indeed melted, then just replace the speaker entirely.
If youre going to need any replacement parts, now is the time to order them. They can either be found directly from the manufacturer but they can be expensive or from stereo specialties shops. An often overlooked fact is to know the part number or numbers of the pieces you are looking for. They are normally located on the inside of the speaker or backside of the cone. Doing so will make your life an awful lot easier.
Now that you have all parts you need to properly fix the speaker, take a look at how the damaged part is attached to the speaker. Once you remove the broken piece, you are going to need to install the new one the same way.
Now that you are all completed putting the speaker back to together, the only thing left to do is test to see if all your hard work paid off. Hook it back up to the stereo and test it at a low volume slowly turning the volume up to see if it can handle. If the speaker is still not working and you feel like did everything correctly, take it to a professional and let them fix it from there.

Used Coffee Grounds - Good For Your Plants

As you prepare the next pot of morning brew, lifting the lid and removing the used coffee grounds, the first place most people head for is the garbage. I have heard for years that alot of people use coffee grinds as an additive to their gardens. Recently I have seen this in action, saving my coffee grinds in a separate section of my compost and sprinkling them around my tomato plants, working them into the soil around the base of the plant, the results were amazing ,my tomato plants flourished producing larger than average fruit.

Because of their high nitrogen content used coffee grinds are a great fertilizer for gardens nitrogen is generally difficult for plants to acquire out of all the mineral nutrients in the soil, Most plants have difficulty gathering nitrogen because of how they do it, primarily thru their roots,which are buried in the soil.

Most all plants depend on mineral forms of nitrogen contained in the soil, and this is where your coffee grounds come into play.Used grounds can give your soil the added nitrogen that they need if your soil is lacking it. Coffee grinds also contain potassium, phosphorus, and some other elements that aid the growth of plants. Many rose gardeners have stated (my grandmother included) swear that the addition of coffee grounds have made their roses more colorful and larger than normal.

The coffee grinds when added to your compost break-down very quickly and can be used in a short period of time to help develop your plants. The other thing you can do is simply sprinkle the grounds around the base of your plants as I usually do and blend into the soil. Having said this at the rate I go through coffee I have resorted to dumping the coffee grinds into my compost along with my lawn clippings.

Other reports are claiming that grounds are a natural insect repellent.And can be effective on reducing the amount of ants in a location, simply sprinkling coffee grounds on the anthill or where they are traveling will deter them from that area.

In any case using coffee grounds to benefit plant growth seems to be an excellent alternative to discarding them in my garbage, it's a little extra work but it is free so I will continue to do so !

When we are done, we try and save them in the correct format to preserve the image in the best way possible, but most people have no idea what the differences are.

The three main files a digital camera uses to store its digital images are JPEG, TIFF, and RAW formats. We need to understand what these digital image formats are and their properties - only then will we be able to get a high quality photograph.

The first format, and the one used in graphic design and photography quite often, is JPEG - a commonly used standard method of compression of images. In fact, the majority of photographers use this as their primary image mode. One of the main reasons is because it can be used right out of the camera with no editing, as it is considered a high-quality first use image. It also transfers easily across the Internet, and as email attachments. Plus it is fastest writer from the camera memory buffer to the memory card storage.

On the other side, it is not as sharp out of the camera as TIFF or RAW modes, and every time the JPEG is manipulated more than once or twice, it will eventually become unusable. But more than any of this, every time the JPEG image is modified and resaved, it will lose more data.

PEG stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group", named after the joint committee which created it in 1986. The JPEG (file extensions are .jpg, along with .jpeg, .jfif, jpg., .JPG, and .JPE) format provides for lossy compression of images, which means that when data is compressed, and then decompressed, the data that is decompressed may be different than the original. Yet, it is sufficient to be useful in some way or another.

JPEG/JFIF is the format that is used when photographs are stored and transmitted on the Internet. It is preferably over GIF, which is limited to 256 colors that are not enough for colored photographs, or PNG, what produces larger image files.

But then, just as many photographers use TIFF as their primary usage. The TIFF is a file format used for storing images such as line art and photographs, developed by Aldus, now Adobe Systems, and Microsoft. A popular format for high color depth images, it is supported by many image-manipulation programs such as Pagemaker, QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, etc. It is extremely high in its image quality, with excellent compatibility with the publishing companies.

Tiff can be modified and resaved, with the images being used an endless number of times without throwing away any image data. Plus the image is extremely usable, as it does not require software post-processing during or after its download from the camera. It is a flexible and adaptable , with an advantage of no picture loss, which makes it acceptable to the publishing industry.

Compared to the RAW format, it uses less storage space, and is suitable for changes from any photo-editing software. A big disadvantage is its very large file size, still choking small e-mail boxes. During photography shoots, memory cards are needed if using TIFF images, but more pictures can be taken with the same amount of memory space.

The RAW mode is a picture format where the camera has made absolutely no changes; the files are not yet processed or ready to use with an editor, etc. Not a whole lot of professionals use this mode, other than camera purists, or weird website article writers. In order for it to be manipulated, the image needs to be processed and converted to an RGB format that is either TIFF or JPEG. This means that each and every pixel that was captured by the camera is now on the image.

You can now download this image on your computer for processing. Its advantages are that a huge amount of control over the final look of the image is yours. Additionally, all original details stays in the image for any and all future processing needs.

However, when you do so you will notice that this is a very large image, probably a few MBs. This means that you will need a very large storage area or memory space if you are going to shoot images in RAW format. Your advantage is that you can sharpen, size, or crop the picture without losing any picture quality.

But your disadvantage is the file size. You cannot transmit it easily because it needs high bandwidth connections. Also, you can shoot very few photographs if you select the RAW mode. After that, you have to change the memory card or make space by erasing a few photographs. Also, this mode is generally not accepted by the publishing industry because it produces a 12-bit image. The photographer needs to modify it using photo-editing software before submitting it for publication.

Overall, if a photographer wants to keep all the original image data that was recorded, the image must be stored in RAW format. It is the closest thing that we will be able to see in a film negative or a transparency that the digital camera can make.
